Rookie Sean Evans has clinched his first Tyrepower V8 SuperUte Series win during a chaotic Race 2 on Saturday at Motormall Wanneroo Raceway.
The ‘Gunslinger’ shot off the line from the Reverse Grid pole and led the top-nine inversion race until a late pass dropped him to second on the road.
Evans (#33 Airbag Man Racing Mitsubishi Triton) had controlled 15 of the 17 laps before Anthony Jewell (#28 Briteforce Racing Mitsubishi Triton) got by in the closing stages. However post race, Evans was elevated to the win after Jewell was penalised 15-seconds for a yellow flag infringement.
As the lights went out, Evans made the better start alongside fellow rookie Jack Westbury (#29 Mitsubishi Triton) and led into Turn 1, but the race was quickly neutralised when Michael Clark (#3 Clark Tyres Ford Ranger) speared into the Turn 7 sand trap with suspected steering damage. He joined Jonathon Hanbury (#22 Apogee Motorsport Holden Colorado) on the sidelines, with a broken axle.
At the restart Evans led away cleanly and stretched his advantage to almost three seconds. Behind him, a five-car scrap for second raged, Westbury defending hard against Jewell, Justin Ruggier (#88 Thrifty Western Syd Motorsport Toyota Hilux), Adam Marjoram (#15 Team Motion Racing Isuzu D-Max) and Rossi Johnson (#333 Shorebarge / Apogee Motorsport Holden Colorado). Post-race, Johnson received a 15-second penalty for a driving infringement on Adrian Cottrell.
Marjoram carved through the pack from eighth to finish second, while leading series rookie Westbury rounded out the podium, ahead of David Sieders in fourth, who maintains his narrow round points lead over Marjoram. Ruggier recovered to fifth after missing a gear early and slipping to seventh in the battle for second.
Cody Brewczynski (#18 Custom Lithium/WSM Mazda BT-50) followed him home, the Motormall Wanneroo Raceway V8 SuperUte lap record holder making up six places from the inverted grid.
Adrian Cottrell (#41 Team Forty One Holden Colorado) took another strong result in seventh, ahead of Craig Woods (#64 Thrifty Western Sydney Motorsport Toyota Hilux). Grant Johnson (#7 EFS 4×4 Accessories Isuzu D-MAX) and Jason Norris (#8 Auto Masters Racing Ford Ranger) rounded out the top 10.
Round 3 of the Tyrepower V8 SuperUte Series concludes on Sunday with Race 3 at 9.15am and Race 4 at 1.20pm, both live on FoxSports 506 and Kayo.
