Aaron Borg on top in wet opening session at Bathurst

Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series leader Aaron Borg has topped the one and only practice session ahead of the penultimate round at Bathurst.

Borg led the session early, but Craig Dontas in the Ryco 24.7 Racing Mitsubishi Triton was the driver to beat approaching the closing stages of the session on a 3m 00.681s in what were inclement and treacherous conditions.

However, Borg lowered the mark to a 2m 59.680s driving the ACDelco Holden Colorado and was going faster on his next lap before being held up across the top before aborting.

Dontas held second from David Sieders in the Sieders Racing Team Mitsubishi Triton, Craig Woods was the fastest Toyota Hilux in his Western Sydney Motorsport entry ahead of the similar Fat Freddy’s Lager example of teammate Ben Walsh.

There were no major incidents, although a couple of minor spins occurred with no damage incurred.

Behind the top five was Borg’s chief title rival George Gutierrez in the Go Sunny Solar Holden Colorado, with the Abcor Racing Hilux of Rohan Barry, Ellexandra Best driving the Best Leisure Industries Triton, World’s Best Technology’s Jaidan Maggs in another Mitsubishi and the lone Isuzu D-Max of Bendix Racing’s Dave Casey completing the 10.

Rounding out the remainder of the field was experienced campaigner Richard Mork in the City Rural Insurance Brokers Mazda, Craig Jenner behind the wheel of his BT-50 and Gates JKD Racing Team’s Dean Brooking placed his Hilux 13th.

Gerard Maggs failed to complete a lap in the World’s Best Technology Ford Ranger.

The Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series competitors now prepare for qualifying later this afternoon at 1:35pm, but before then an autograph session involving all drivers at the category paddock at 12:00pm.
